Iran has issued a stern warning regarding the potential for severe environmental and security risks in the region should the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant be targeted by military strikes.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the statement was made by Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani. She emphasized that the Persian Gulf region could face catastrophic consequences from such an attack, noting that Tehran has already raised the issue with international organizations, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The warning follows an announcement by the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran on April 4, which claimed that the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant had been targeted by the United States and Israel, resulting in the death of one employee. In response to the escalating situation, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the strike, while Rosatom reportedly initiated the evacuation of its personnel from the facility to ensure their safety.
The Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, located on Iran's Persian Gulf coast, is the country's first commercial nuclear power reactor and a critical component of its energy infrastructure. Built with significant technical assistance from Russia's Rosatom, the facility has long been a focal point of international discussions regarding nuclear safety and regional stability. Experts suggest that any disruption to the plant's operations or damage to its structural integrity could lead to widespread ecological contamination affecting all littoral states of the Persian Gulf.
