The government of Bangladesh has officially requested permission from the United States to purchase oil from Russia to address its growing energy needs. According to Operative Information Center-OMM, citing foreign media reports, the request aims to mitigate the impact of rising global energy costs.
The proposal was put forward by Bangladesh's Minister of Finance and Planning, Amir Chowdhury, following a meeting on March 11 with the US Ambassador to Dhaka, Brent Christensen. During the discussions, it was highlighted that Bangladesh remains heavily dependent on oil imports from the Middle East. However, since the outbreak of conflict in that region, supply chains have been significantly disrupted, leading to energy security concerns for the South Asian nation.
US President Donald Trump has previously indicated an intention to ease oil-related sanctions on several countries. US President Donald Trump argued that such measures would help stabilize global energy markets and prevent further spikes in oil prices caused by ongoing US-Israeli military operations. Bangladesh, like many developing economies, is seeking to diversify its energy sources to maintain economic stability. Historically, Bangladesh has maintained a neutral foreign policy, focusing on infrastructure development and energy security as key pillars of its national growth strategy.
