Construction of a new passenger cable car has commenced in the Heydar Aliyev Park in Balakan, Azerbaijan. The project is part of a strategic initiative to modernize transport and tourism infrastructure in the country's northwestern region.
The Azerbaijan Yerüstü Nəqliyyat Agentliyi (AYNA) under the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport informed Operative Information Center-OMM that the dismantling of the existing old cable car system is currently underway. At the initial stage, the cables, as well as all technological and electrical equipment of the lower and upper terminals, have been decommissioned. According to the technical design, the new Balakan cable car will span 850 meters in length with a height of 53 meters. The system will operate with six cabins, providing a transport capacity of 330 passengers per hour, with a total travel time of approximately four minutes.
The project was officially authorized following a decree signed by President Ilham Aliyev on May 8, 2025, regarding the design and construction of the passenger cable car in Balakan's Heydar Aliyev Park. This development is expected to significantly boost the tourism potential of the region, which is known for its unique natural landscapes and proximity to the Zagatala State Nature Reserve. The modernization of such facilities aligns with Azerbaijan's broader economic strategy to diversify the non-oil sector by developing regional tourism hubs and improving recreational services for both local residents and international visitors.
