The Committee on International Relations and Interparliamentary Ties of the Milli Majlis has recommended the establishment of an Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Portuguese Republic for consideration at the parliament's extraordinary session.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the committee held a formal meeting to discuss the legislative proposal. It was noted during the session that, under the draft law, the administrative building for the new diplomatic mission will be located in Lisbon.
The committee approved the draft law and forwarded it to the plenary session for final adoption. This move signifies a deepening of diplomatic ties between the two nations, following recent high-level correspondence. Notably, Portuguese President António José Seguro emphasized in a congratulatory letter to President Ilham Aliyev on June 5 that the opening of embassies in both Baku and Lisbon would significantly contribute to the development of bilateral relations.
The establishment of this embassy marks a strategic step in Azerbaijan's foreign policy, aiming to strengthen cooperation with European Union member states. Diplomatic missions serve as vital hubs for fostering political dialogue, economic partnerships, and cultural exchange, and this expansion reflects Azerbaijan's growing role in international affairs and its commitment to broadening its diplomatic footprint across Europe.
