Australia is preparing to introduce legislation that would grant citizens the ability to disable the algorithms that determine the content displayed on their social media feeds.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing international media reports, the proposed bill is expected to be presented to parliament this week.
Under the new proposal, users would be given the option to opt out of personalized social media feeds curated by algorithms. Australian Communications Minister Anika Wells stated that the new regulations are designed to ensure technology companies provide a safer digital environment for users. She warned that major platforms, including Meta, Google, and TikTok, could face significant financial penalties if they fail to offer users the choice to disable these algorithms.
Minister Wells noted that the government will consider expert feedback on how to implement "opt-in" or "opt-out" mechanisms for algorithmic feeds. The goal, she emphasized, is to empower Australians with greater control over the content they encounter on social media. While acknowledging that many users may choose to continue using algorithmic feeds, she stressed that this must be a conscious decision made by the individual.
The initiative has faced skepticism from the opposition. Liberal Party leader Angus Taylor expressed significant doubt regarding the proposal, suggesting it could create risks of censorship. He urged the government to prioritize resolving existing issues surrounding the ban on social media use for individuals under 16.
Minister Wells rejected these accusations, clarifying that the new regulations are not about censorship. Instead, she explained, the objective is to mandate that major technology companies identify and mitigate risks on their platforms. The proposed legislation extends beyond algorithmic control; it also aims to hold platforms accountable for preventing the spread of harmful content, including videos that promote eating disorders.
This legislative move reflects a growing global trend among governments seeking to regulate "Big Tech" companies. Countries worldwide are increasingly scrutinizing the impact of social media algorithms on public discourse, mental health, and data privacy, often leading to stricter regulatory frameworks aimed at increasing corporate transparency and user autonomy.
