The Australian government is intensifying its efforts to combat the spread of the H5N1 avian influenza virus across the country.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, official data indicates that the number of confirmed infection cases has surpassed 230.
In response to the growing threat, the government has decided to initiate a vaccination program for endangered native bird species currently kept in captivity or under special protection. The vaccination campaign is expected to commence across various states and regions in the coming days. The process will be selective, with specific bird species prioritized based on their susceptibility to the virus and the potential efficacy of the vaccine.
Minister for the Environment and Water, Tanya Plibersek, noted that the primary focus will be on birds under human care. Officials explained that due to the requirement for a two-dose regimen, large-scale vaccination of wild bird populations remains logistically unfeasible under current conditions.
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Julie Collins, stated that while it is impossible to completely halt the spread of the virus among wild bird populations, targeted measures can be taken to protect high-risk species. According to the Minister, vaccination has become a cornerstone of this broader defense strategy.
