The migration crisis unfolding in the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta has exposed deep divisions within the European Union, raising concerns about the bloc's internal cohesion.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Alicia Garcia-Herrero, chief economist for the Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East at the French financial group Natixis, discussed the situation in an interview with the Associated Press (AP).
The expert noted that regardless of the outcomes of the upcoming meeting of EU interior ministers scheduled for August 4, Europe is already demonstrating significant fragmentation. Garcia-Herrero emphasized that this situation poses serious risks for Europe, particularly against the backdrop of growing external political and economic threats. "Europe has once again shown its weakness, and a very significant weakness at that," the economist stated.
The incident occurred on July 30 at the Ceuta border, where thousands of migrants from Morocco and other nations attempted to cross into Spanish territory. Some migrants breached land border barriers, while others attempted to reach the city's beaches by sea. This event highlights the ongoing challenges the EU faces regarding border management and the lack of a unified migration policy among member states, a recurring issue that has historically strained relations within the Schengen Area and tested the bloc's solidarity mechanisms.
