An assassination attempt targeting President Michael Andrianiriana of Madagascar has been successfully thwarted, according to an official statement released by the country's Prosecutor General's Office. The authorities announced that a sophisticated plot to eliminate the head of state and destabilize the government was uncovered following an extensive investigation.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing Bloomberg, that 13 suspects are facing charges related to the assassination plot and other state crimes, with 11 individuals already in custody. Prosecutor General Narindra Navalona Rakotoniayna stated in a televised address that one of the primary organizers is Colonel Patrick Rakotomamonjy, a military officer who remains at large. "Those involved include active-duty officers, including a general who had previously publicly declared his readiness to carry out a coup d'etat," the Prosecutor General added.
The prosecution has presented evidence including SMS messages, WhatsApp correspondence, and findings from searches conducted at the suspects' residences. According to the Prosecutor General, several detainees confessed that the 20 billion ariary ($4.8 million) discovered in their bank accounts was specifically earmarked for the execution of the assassination and the subsequent seizure of power. Madagascar, an island nation off the southeast coast of Africa, has a history of political instability and several previous coup attempts, making this latest discovery a significant security concern for the region.
