Estonian President Alar Karis has expressed support for the appointment of a European Union special representative to restore communication channels and facilitate dialogue between Russia and Ukraine.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing foreign media, that the Estonian leader highlighted the necessity of a diplomatic mediator in the ongoing conflict. "Yes, we need an envoy. The question is likely who it will be, and I believe we have many options," President Karis stated.

The President emphasized that the selected special representative must hail from a "major European country" and possess the trust of both the Russian and Ukrainian sides to ensure the effectiveness of the mission. This statement follows remarks by French President Emmanuel Macron, who previously indicated that technical-level preparations for the appointment of such a representative have already commenced.

In January, reports surfaced suggesting that EU member states were discussing the possibility of appointing a special envoy to conduct negotiations on behalf of the Union. Finnish President Alexander Stubb has been mentioned as a potential candidate for the role. The initiative aims to create a structured diplomatic framework to address the regional security crisis and explore avenues for a peaceful resolution.

The proposal for a dedicated EU envoy comes amid increasing international efforts to find a diplomatic exit to the conflict. Historically, the European Union has utilized special representatives to manage complex geopolitical crises, aiming to provide a unified voice for the bloc's 27 member states in high-stakes international mediation.
