The US Department of Energy has commenced the emergency release of up to 10 million barrels of crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) as part of a coordinated plan with the International Energy Agency (IEA).

Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing international media, that the crude will be supplied from the Bryan Mound storage site in Texas. The release is structured as an exchange, meaning the oil will be provided as a loan to be returned with additional barrels by 2027.

According to official statements, this exchange mechanism allows refineries and the global market to access immediate supply while ensuring that additional reserves are secured for the American public without utilizing taxpayer funds. This move follows a broader agreement by IEA member countries to release a total of 400 million barrels of oil from strategic reserves to stabilize global markets amid ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Under this commitment, the United States, led by US President Donald Trump, has pledged to provide 172 million barrels, having already released 45.2 million barrels from sites including Bayou Choctaw and West Hackberry in Louisiana, as well as Bryan Mound in Texas.

The Strategic Petroleum Reserve is the world's largest supply of emergency crude oil, established primarily to reduce the impact of disruptions in petroleum supplies. Managed by the Department of Energy, these underground salt caverns provide a critical cushion for the global energy infrastructure during periods of geopolitical volatility or natural disasters. By coordinating with the IEA, the United States aims to mitigate price spikes and ensure energy security for both domestic consumers and international partners.
