In the second half, despite increased pressure from the US, a mistake by goalkeeper Matt Freese allowed Hans Vanaken to extend the lead to two goals in the 57th minute. Romelu Lukaku sealed the final score during stoppage time. Belgium is set to face European champions Spain in the next round.
US head coach Mauricio Pochettino stated that his team struggled to fully adapt to the game, noting that conceding immediately after equalizing was a critical issue. Midfielder Tyler Adams expressed disappointment, citing the team's inability to capitalize on created opportunities.
