The first execution occurred in Oklahoma, where 70-year-old Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez was put to death by lethal injection. He had been convicted for the 2003 murder of his wife. Despite appeals citing his mental health struggles, his requests for clemency were denied by the authorities.
Approximately one hour after the Oklahoma execution, the death sentence of 66-year-old Darrell Haynes was carried out in Tennessee. Haynes had been on death row for the 1985 murder of a hotel employee. His legal team had petitioned to halt the execution, citing his physical disability and severe illness, but the appeals were ultimately unsuccessful.
The third and final execution of the day took place in Alabama, where 42-year-old Jeremy Williams was executed. Williams had been convicted for the 2021 rape and murder of a five-year-old girl. Reports indicate that Williams waived his right to file further appeals.
Currently, the death penalty remains legal in 27 of the 50 US states. While the last time three executions were recorded in a single day was January 7, 2010, recent statistics indicate a fluctuating trend in the application of capital punishment across the country. Last year, 47 individuals were executed nationwide, a notable increase from the 25 executions recorded the previous year, with Florida accounting for a significant portion of these cases with 19 executions.
