The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which kicks off today, marks a significant milestone in football history, introducing several major innovations to the tournament format.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, this edition of the tournament is historic as it is the first to be jointly hosted by three nations: the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

This tournament will also be remembered as the largest in World Cup history in terms of participation. Following a decision by FIFA, the 2026 World Cup will feature 48 national teams, an increase of 16 teams compared to previous tournaments which hosted 32. Consequently, the competition will see a record-breaking 104 matches played. Notably, the national teams of Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan will be making their tournament debuts.

The matches will be held across 16 cities. The United States will host the majority of the games, with 11 cities selected as venues. Canada and Mexico will host matches in two and three cities, respectively. In the United States, host cities include major centers such as Houston, Boston, Kansas City, New York/New Jersey, Los Angeles, Miami, Dallas, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Seattle, and San Francisco. Matches in Canada will take place in Toronto and Vancouver, while Mexico will host games in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey.

The opening match between Mexico and South Africa is scheduled to take place at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The final match will be held at MetLife Stadium in the New York/New Jersey area of the United States.

The 2026 World Cup is considered the largest in the history of world football, not only due to the number of participants and the scale of the matches but also because of the unprecedented tri-nation organizational effort.
