The North-South international transport corridor project holds strategic significance for Azerbaijan, serving as a vital link in regional connectivity.

According to Operative Information Center-OMM, Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov made these remarks today in Moscow during a joint press conference with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, following bilateral negotiations.

"This project is of great importance to us," Minister Jeyhun Bayramov stated. He emphasized that all aspects regarding the development of the Azerbaijani section of the corridor, previously agreed upon with the Russian side, are being implemented on schedule.

The Minister noted that if necessary, Azerbaijan is prepared to increase the corridor's capacity to 5 million tons per year by 2028. "Once the Russian side completes all works and the infrastructure within Iran is finalized, Baku is ready to increase the throughput capacity of the section located on its territory," he added.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also highlighted the development of railway infrastructure in Astara, Iran. He noted that the construction of the terminal, financed by Azerbaijani capital, is effectively complete, with readiness estimated at 98%. Currently, the parties are working on finalizing the procedures for the commissioning and acceptance of the facility.

The North-South transport corridor is a multi-modal route connecting India, Iran, Azerbaijan, and Russia, designed to significantly reduce transit times for goods moving between South Asia and Northern Europe. By integrating rail, road, and maritime networks, the corridor aims to enhance regional trade efficiency and strengthen economic ties between the participating nations.
