The United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) has conducted a counter-narcotics operation in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. US military forces intercepted and subsequently sank a vessel suspected of being utilized for illicit drug trafficking.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the operation was executed in close coordination with the government of Ecuador.
Reports indicate that the vessel was allegedly operated by the "Los Choneros" drug cartel to facilitate illegal shipments. Special forces deployed from the US Navy warship USS San Antonio boarded the vessel and secured control of the craft. Following a thorough inspection, the vessel was emptied and scuttled for safety reasons.
The individuals detained on the vessel are to be transferred to Ecuadorian authorities for further legal proceedings. US officials emphasized that the operation was designed to disrupt the logistics networks of drug cartels and mitigate narko-terrorist activities in the region.
The Eastern Pacific has long been a critical corridor for transnational criminal organizations attempting to smuggle narcotics into North America. Operations like this, often involving international partnerships, are part of a broader strategy by the US and its regional allies to dismantle the maritime supply chains that fuel organized crime and regional instability.
