Iraq has officially declared a three-day national mourning period following the confirmation of the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing the Iraqi state news agency INA, that the government issued the decree shortly after the official announcement from Tehran. "The Iraqi government has declared a three-day period of mourning across the country," the statement read.

The announcement reflects the deep religious and political ties between Baghdad and Tehran. Ali Khamenei had served as the Supreme Leader of Iran since 1989, succeeding the founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. During his tenure, he exerted significant influence over regional geopolitics, particularly in neighboring Iraq, where various political and social groups maintain close ideological connections with the Iranian leadership. This period of mourning in Iraq is expected to involve the flying of flags at half-mast and the cancellation of official celebrations.
