Azerbaijan is preparing for a significant heatwave, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 40°C on August 25.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the National Hydrometeorological Service has issued a weather advisory regarding the upcoming spike in temperatures.
In Baku and on the Absheron Peninsula, the weather is expected to be dry. Daytime temperatures will range between 31°C and 36°C, while nighttime temperatures are forecast to be between 23°C and 26°C. Atmospheric pressure will be at 759 mm of mercury, with relative humidity levels fluctuating between 70-75% at night and 45-50% during the day.
Across the districts of Azerbaijan, the weather is also expected to remain largely dry. However, meteorologists note a probability of short-term, light rain and thunderstorms in some mountainous areas during the day. Fog is expected in certain mountainous regions during the night and morning hours, accompanied by a moderate easterly wind.
Temperatures in the regions are forecast to reach 34-39°C, with some areas seeing highs of up to 40°C. In mountainous regions, nighttime temperatures will range from 14-18°C, with daytime highs reaching 23-28°C.
Extreme heatwaves are a recurring meteorological phenomenon in Azerbaijan during the summer months, often driven by high-pressure systems that bring hot air masses from the south. The National Hydrometeorological Service regularly monitors these conditions to provide timely warnings to the public, particularly for those working outdoors or in agriculture, to mitigate health risks associated with prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
