An event dedicated to the 103rd birth anniversary of Honored Scientist, prominent ophthalmologist-scientist, and academician Zarifa Aliyeva was held at the Presidential Library on April 28. The ceremony brought together distinguished figures from the fields of science and culture, government officials, and family members of the late academician.
The Operative Information Center-OMM was informed by the Presidential Library that the Director of the Presidential Library, Professor Afat Abbasova, opened the event by highlighting Zarifa Aliyeva's exceptional contributions to the development of medical science in Azerbaijan. Describing her as a personality who brought light to the lives of thousands, Professor Abbasova emphasized that Zarifa Aliyeva remains eternally in the memory of the Azerbaijani people not only as a great scientist but also as an exemplary mother and a devoted life partner.
The event featured a video presentation documenting the rich life path and scientific activities of Zarifa Aliyeva, showcasing her contributions to the field of ophthalmology. Furthermore, the Presidential Library has developed an electronic project, a virtual exhibition, and a traditional book exhibition dedicated to the academician to promote her extensive scientific heritage. Speakers at the event, including family member Lala Jafarova and various historians and journalists, shared insights into her professional legacy and noble character, noting that her life serves as an unforgettable example of dedication to science and humanity.
Academician Zarifa Aliyeva (1923–1985) was a pioneering figure in Azerbaijani medicine, particularly known for her fundamental research in the treatment of trachoma and professional eye diseases. As the spouse of National Leader Heydar Aliyev and the mother of President Ilham Aliyev, her legacy is deeply intertwined with the social and scientific history of Azerbaijan. Her research at the Azerbaijan State Institute for Postgraduate Medical Education helped establish modern standards for ophthalmological care in the country.
