The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has initiated a criminal case against an individual accused of editing and distributing photos of students for blackmail purposes.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, the Main Cybercrime Department received numerous complaints regarding the incident. The reports indicated that an unidentified individual manipulated photos of law students from Baku State University and other higher education institutions, adding offensive captions. The suspect then demanded money from the students in exchange for deleting the images from social media platforms.
As a result of operational and technical measures carried out by the cyber police, 28-year-old Fakhri Jabrayilov was detained as a suspect. Investigations revealed that Jabrayilov searched for images on the TikTok social network using the "law students" hashtag. He subsequently used artificial intelligence software to manipulate these images and posted them on fake accounts with insulting remarks. The suspect demanded various sums of money from students who contacted him to have the content removed. A criminal case has been opened by the Main Department, and Jabrayilov has been charged under the relevant article of the Criminal Code and brought into the investigation as an accused person.
This case highlights the growing challenge of AI-driven cybercrime in Azerbaijan. The Ministry of Internal Affairs continues to strengthen its digital forensic capabilities to combat the misuse of deepfake technology and online extortion. Legal experts in Baku emphasize that such crimes carry significant prison sentences under Azerbaijani law, reflecting the state's commitment to protecting the digital rights and personal reputation of its citizens.
