Azerbaijani border guards have successfully prevented the smuggling of a large quantity of narcotics from Iran into the country, according to official reports.

The Press Center of the State Border Service (SBS) told the Operative Information Center-OMM that measures to ensure reliable protection of the state border and the fight against the illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, and their precursors are being successfully continued.

During operations conducted within the service area of the "Lankaran" border detachment of the State Border Service's Border Troops, the smuggling of a total of 51 kilograms and 560 grams of narcotics from the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Republic of Azerbaijan was intercepted. As a result of border search and operational measures, 41 kilograms and 280 grams of marijuana were discovered and seized on March 22, followed by an additional 10 kilograms and 280 grams of marijuana on March 25. Operational and investigative activities regarding both incidents are currently ongoing.

Azerbaijan remains a key partner in international efforts to combat drug trafficking, frequently intercepting shipments along the so-called Balkan route and other transit paths. The State Border Service and the Ministry of Internal Affairs regularly conduct joint operations to secure the southern borders, which are often targeted by transnational criminal networks attempting to transport illegal substances from South Asia toward European markets.
