Azerbaijan is set to place 76 newly identified historical monuments under state protection, according to the State Service for the Protection, Development, and Restoration of Cultural Heritage.

This announcement was made to the Operative Information Center-OMM following a meeting of the Expert Council on the Identification of Immovable Cultural Properties, which operates under the Ministry of Culture.

During the session, Deputy Minister of Culture Saadat Yusifova provided a detailed overview of the ongoing efforts to update the national registry of immovable historical and cultural monuments, which was originally established in 2001. The Expert Council continues to evaluate objects of historical, architectural, and archaeological significance to ensure their legal protection.

Professor Gulchohra Mammadova, chair of the Expert Council and rector of the Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction, noted that the Ministry of Culture's State Service had submitted comprehensive materials for review. The meeting focused on 76 newly identified sites located across two cities and nine districts. Following deliberations, the Council approved measures to register these sites as state-protected monuments.

To date, the Expert Council has reviewed 748 monuments and newly discovered samples, securing expert opinions from the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. In total, expertise acts have been prepared for approximately 4,000 monuments and newly identified cultural assets.

The protection of cultural heritage remains a priority for the Republic of Azerbaijan, which actively manages its vast historical landscape. In recent years, the state has systematically updated its registry, including adjustments to data for 8 monuments in 2025 and 87 in 2026, as well as the inclusion of 51 new samples in the previous year. Furthermore, a draft decision regarding the protection of 31 newly identified sites in the Yasamal district of Baku has been finalized and submitted for approval.
