Law enforcement authorities in Astara have successfully intercepted a significant shipment of illegal narcotics, leading to the arrest of two individuals involved in drug trafficking. The operation marks another step in the ongoing efforts by Azerbaijani security forces to combat the illicit drug trade within the country.

According to the Lankaran regional group of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) press service, which provided details to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the operation resulted in the seizure of 18 kilograms of marijuana and opium. The drugs were discovered in a vehicle driven by 45-year-old Vugar Guliyev. Subsequent investigations revealed that Guliyev had obtained the illicit substances through an acquaintance, 46-year-old Turab Agayev, who was subsequently apprehended by police officers.

A criminal case has been initiated regarding the incident, and both suspects have been remanded in custody by court order pending further investigation. Azerbaijan frequently conducts such operations to secure its borders and internal regions against transnational organized crime, including the smuggling of narcotics, which remains a key priority for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the State Border Service in maintaining public safety.
