Türkiye and Bulgaria have reached an agreement to construct a new border crossing point along their shared frontier, a move designed to bolster trade and logistics between the two countries.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced the development during a joint press conference in Sofia with his Bulgarian counterpart, Velislava Petrova-Chamova.
Fidan emphasized that connectivity and transport remain central pillars of the cooperation between Ankara and Sofia. "Infrastructure in these areas is of critical importance not only for our countries but also for the Middle Corridor, our region, and European supply chains. In this regard, we have reaffirmed our joint determination to build a new border crossing north of Kapikule, which is currently Europe's busiest border gate," Fidan stated.
The minister added that the discussions also covered increasing the capacity of existing border checkpoints and implementing new road and rail transport projects to further strengthen regional connectivity.
The Middle Corridor, or the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, is a strategic logistical network connecting China to Europe via Central Asia, the Caspian Sea, the South Caucasus, and Türkiye. Enhancing border infrastructure between Türkiye and Bulgaria is vital for ensuring the seamless flow of goods along this route, which has gained significant geopolitical and economic importance in recent years as an alternative trade artery.
