US President Donald Trump addressed the issue of weapons supplies to Ukraine during his annual State of the Union address to Congress.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, the head of state announced that member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance are purchasing weapons sent to Ukraine at full price under the "Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List" (PURL) program.
President Donald Trump emphasized that every military aid package sent by the United States to Ukraine is facilitated through NATO, with allies fully reimbursing the U.S. for these funds. The President also recalled that members of the military bloc have agreed to allocate 5 percent of their GDP to the NATO general budget, a move viewed as a step toward a more equitable distribution of the financial burden within the alliance.
It should be noted that on February 3, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte highlighted different aspects regarding this matter. He stated that not all alliance members are inclined to purchase weapons from the U.S. under the PURL initiative, noting that while some countries contribute significantly, others remain passive.
The PURL program represents a strategic shift in how military assistance is coordinated among Western allies, aiming to streamline the procurement process while ensuring that the financial responsibility is shared among member states. This development comes amid ongoing discussions regarding the long-term sustainability of international support for Ukraine and the modernization of NATO's collective defense capabilities.
