Trump comments on AfD’s election success in Germany

US President Donald Trump has commented on the electoral success of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in Germany.

The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Trump made the remarks in a post on his Truth Social platform.

He described the AfD as a populist party and said it had gained popularity amid what he called Germany’s “terrible immigration laws.”

“It is a triumphant night for the populist party in Germany. They are finally tired of the absolutely terrible immigration rules and regulations that are doing serious damage to Germany,” the US president wrote.

Trump added that the party’s position was strengthening after winning the regional election.

The AfD had earlier won 43.8 percent of the vote in elections to the parliament of the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) received 17.2 percent.

AfD is a right-wing political party founded in Germany in 2013. Regional elections in Germany determine the composition of state parliaments, which are responsible for matters including education, policing and cultural policy.
