Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has advocated for the resumption of nuclear arms control negotiations with Russia.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing foreign media outlets, that the former chief of the alliance stressed the necessity of establishing new security frameworks.

"I believe that by relying on strength and reliable deterrents, we must renew our relations with Russia. We must find a way to establish a new arms control regime," he noted.

According to Stoltenberg, such dialogue should be possible in the future, just as it was during the Cold War era. He expressed regret that the entire arms control architecture developed during and after the Cold War has effectively ceased to exist. Addressing the issue of reducing Europe's dependence on the United States' nuclear umbrella, Stoltenberg emphasized that NATO's nuclear deterrence capability remains fundamentally based on nuclear assets in Europe.

"Doctrines, command structures, and control mechanisms are in place. We must not disrupt the deterrence mechanism. Great Britain and France are NATO members, and their nuclear weapons contribute to the alliance's collective defense," he added.

The call for renewed dialogue comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions between the West and Moscow. Historically, arms control treaties such as the INF and New START served as pillars of global stability, but many of these agreements have been suspended or terminated in recent years. Stoltenberg's remarks highlight a growing debate within the alliance regarding the balance between maintaining a strong military posture and seeking diplomatic channels to prevent nuclear escalation.
