The United States administration is aiming to construct three new military bases in the southern part of Greenland.

Operative Information Center-OMM, citing foreign media reports, notes that this move is being viewed as an effort to strengthen strategic positioning in the North Atlantic following previous discussions initiated by US President Donald Trump.

The White House has confirmed that high-level contacts with Denmark and Greenland are ongoing, expressing satisfaction with the progress of the negotiations. The primary objective of the planned bases is to monitor the activities of Russia and China in the region. These facilities, to be located in the strategically significant "GIUK" (Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom) gap, are expected to play a crucial role in controlling maritime traffic. The Narsarsuaq region, which houses an old military airfield, is currently considered the leading candidate for a base location due to existing infrastructure.

The current negotiations are being managed by a specialized working group in Washington. The process is led by Michael Needham from the State Department, who has reportedly met with Danish counterparts at least five times since January. While the Denmark Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the existence of diplomatic channels with the US, it has declined to provide specific details regarding the project.

During the Cold War, the United States maintained 17 military facilities on the island. Currently, only the "Pituffik" Space Base remains operational in the northwest, specializing in missile warning systems. The addition of new bases in the south would significantly enhance the maritime defense capabilities of the US and its allies in the Arctic circle, a region of increasing geopolitical competition due to melting ice and opening trade routes.
