The spring season has officially arrived in Azerbaijan, marking the beginning of the astronomical new year and the awakening of nature across the country.
Operative Information Center-OMM, citing the Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory, reports that the spring equinox occurred in Azerbaijan on March 20 at 18:46 local time.
During the vernal equinox, the Sun's rays fall perpendicularly on the equator, resulting in nearly equal lengths of day and night across all latitudes. At this moment, the Sun crosses the celestial equator from the Southern Hemisphere to the Northern Hemisphere, signaling the start of spring in the North and autumn in the South.
In Azerbaijan, the arrival of spring is traditionally celebrated with Novruz, one of the most significant national holidays symbolizing rebirth, renewal, and the harmony of nature. The Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory, located on the south-eastern foothills of the Greater Caucasus Mountains, serves as the primary scientific hub for monitoring such celestial events and conducting astronomical research in the region.
