Simonyan: Qaz bahalaşsa, KTMT-dən çıxırıq

Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan has addressed the potential for an increase in Russian gas prices for the Armenian market, suggesting such a move could trigger a significant shift in the country's foreign policy. Speaking to journalists, Simonyan noted that while he considers a price hike unlikely, it would force Armenia to reconsider its strategic alliances.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing Armenian media, that Simonyan emphasized the long-standing nature of these discussions. "Such talks are not new; discussions regarding the prices of gas or goods have been ongoing for many years. If such a decision is made, Armenia will make its own choice and will withdraw from both the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU)," Alen Simonyan stated.

Despite the warning, the Speaker expressed optimism regarding current diplomatic channels, noting that productive dialogue exists between the leadership of both nations. He further clarified that Armenia has not taken any hostile steps against Russia and intends to continue defending the interests of the Republic of Armenia without initiating conflict. Echoing this sentiment, Armenian Economy Minister Gevorg Papoyan stated that gas prices are likely to remain stable, as maintaining Armenia's presence within the CSTO and EAEU remains a priority for regional partners.

The relationship between Yerevan and Moscow has faced increasing strain in recent years, particularly following the 44-day war in 2020 and subsequent regional developments in Garabagh. Armenia has frequently criticized the CSTO for what it perceives as a lack of support during border tensions, leading to the freezing of its participation in the military alliance. This latest rhetoric regarding energy prices highlights the growing intersection between economic dependencies and security commitments in the South Caucasus region.
