Switzerland has begun the gradual restoration of its embassy's operations in Iran, deploying a small group of diplomats to Tehran this week. The move marks a shift in Bern's diplomatic posture following a period of heightened regional instability.

According to a statement from the Swiss government, reported by Operative Information Center-OMM with reference to Al Jazeera, the process involves a phased return rather than an immediate full-scale resumption of mission activities. The embassy had been temporarily closed since March 11, 2025, citing security considerations amid escalating tensions between US President Donald Trump's administration and the Iranian government.

Switzerland plays a unique role in international diplomacy, often serving as a protecting power for countries that do not have direct diplomatic relations. Since 1980, the Swiss Embassy in Tehran has represented the interests of the United States in Iran, acting as the primary channel for communication between Washington and Tehran. The reopening of the mission is seen as a critical step in maintaining these essential diplomatic channels during periods of geopolitical friction in the Middle East.
