Initial clinical trials for a personalized melanoma vaccine in Russia have yielded positive results, with the first patient showing a robust immune response and stable health, according to reports from international media outlets.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the treatment is being developed by the Gamaleya Research Institute. Alexander Ginzburg, the institute's scientific director, confirmed that a 60-year-old patient diagnosed with stage-three melanoma, who received the first dose in April, is currently undergoing treatment.
Ginzburg stated that clinical analyses indicate the patient's body is successfully producing the necessary active agents to combat tumors and metastases. He noted that the immunological response observed in the patient has exceeded initial expectations.
Last year, the Russian Ministry of Health authorized the use of "Neooncovac," an mRNA-based vaccine designed for advanced-stage melanoma, and "Oncopept," a peptide-based preparation targeting colorectal cancer. Gamaleya Institute representatives announced plans to prepare the personalized melanoma vaccine for an additional 10 patients in the coming months, with production timelines ranging from one to three months per patient.
This therapeutic approach focuses on training the immune system to recognize and eliminate cancer cells rather than directly attacking the tumor. The process involves a genetic analysis of both the patient's tumor and healthy tissue samples, allowing for the creation of a vaccine tailored specifically to the individual's genetic profile. Andrey Kaprin, head of the Russian National Medical Research Center for Radiology, emphasized that this technology represents a paradigm shift in cancer treatment.
Furthermore, patients treated with the "Oncopept" preparation have also demonstrated the required immune response. The Gamaleya Institute is currently expanding its research to develop new treatment methods for pancreatic, kidney, and non-small cell lung cancers.
