European Union foreign ministers are scheduled to meet in Cyprus on May 27-28 for an informal gathering to discuss the bloc's strategic approach toward Moscow. The primary focus of the discussions will be the formulation of a unified list of demands for Russia concerning the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, rather than determining who will represent the Union in potential negotiations.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing foreign media, that the discussions will center strictly on the requirements to be presented to Russia within the context of the Ukrainian crisis. European Commission representative Anita Hipper confirmed during a briefing in Brussels that the ministers would prioritize solidarity regarding these demands. "We will discuss what we will talk about, not who will talk with Russia," Hipper stated. Meanwhile, Paula Pinho, head of the European Commission's press service, declined to comment on preferred candidates for future dialogue with Moscow.

The upcoming meeting follows recent comments from Russian officials regarding potential intermediaries. Russian President Vladimir Putin previously suggested that former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder would be a suitable candidate for negotiations, asserting that Russia remains open to dialogue. Conversely, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov expressed reservations about Kaja Kallas participating in such talks, suggesting the role would be challenging for her. These informal meetings, often referred to as Gymnich-style gatherings, allow EU ministers to hold strategic discussions on foreign policy and security issues in a more flexible environment before formal decisions are reached in Brussels.
