President Ilham Aliyev has signed an obituary following the passing of People's Poet Nariman Hasanzade.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the official statement reads:
"Azerbaijani culture has suffered a heavy loss. A prominent representative of modern Azerbaijani literature, Heydar Aliyev Prize laureate, individual pensioner of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Honored Art Worker, and People's Poet Nariman Alimammad oglu Hasanzade passed away on August 1, 2026, at the age of 96."
Nariman Hasanzade was born on February 2, 1931, in the village of Poylu, Gazakh district. Following his secondary education, he studied at the Faculty of Language and Literature of the Ganja State Pedagogical Institute named after Hasan bey Zardabi from 1949 to 1953, and later attended the Gorky Literary Institute in Moscow from 1957 to 1961.
In 1962, Hasanzade entered the postgraduate program at what is now Baku State University, completing his studies in 1965 and defending his dissertation to earn a PhD in Philology.
Beginning his professional career in 1962, Hasanzade held various positions at the "Azerbaijan Youth" newspaper, "Azerbaijan" magazine, and the Azerbaijan Television and Radio Broadcasting Committee. From 1978 to 1991, while serving as editor-in-chief of the "Literature and Art" newspaper, he made significant contributions to enhancing the publication's influence within the literary and social environment.
Between 1991 and 2001, Hasanzade served as the First Deputy Minister and Acting Minister of Press and Information of the Republic of Azerbaijan. From 2001 until the end of his life, he headed the Department of Humanities at the National Aviation Academy.
As a master of words, Hasanzade brought a fresh perspective to literature from the moment he entered the world of poetry. Remaining loyal to the centuries-old traditions of national literature, he enriched the poetic treasury of the Azerbaijani people with his unique style. His works, centered on themes of patriotism, national freedom, and moral elevation, kept him at the forefront of the literary process. His poems, noted for their sincerity, fluidity, and natural language, captured the thoughts and feelings of his contemporaries. Through his poems and verse plays, he brought to life key historical events and great figures with deep patriotism and a sense of national statehood. His works were successfully staged in theaters and set to music, remaining beloved by audiences today.
Hasanzade's contributions were highly valued throughout his career. He was awarded the "Shohrat" (2001), "Sharaf" (2011), and "Istiglal" (2021) orders, and in 2026, he was honored with the "Heydar Aliyev" Order.
The memory of Nariman Alimammad oglu Hasanzade, a distinguished poet, playwright, and public figure, will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
