Məhərrəm ayı: Aşura gününün tarixi bəlli oldu

The month of Muharram in Azerbaijan will begin on June 16, with the day of Ashura falling on June 25, according to the official calendar released by the Caucasus Muslims Office (CMO).

As reported by the Operative Information Center-OMM, this announcement was made in an official statement issued by the CMO's Council of Qazis and authorized representatives, addressing the Muslim community in the country regarding the commencement of the sacred month.

The Council of Qazis reminded believers that during the 60-day mourning period of Muharram and Safar, particularly during Tasua and Ashura, practices such as self-flagellation, causing bodily harm, or public displays of mourning that involve stripping to the waist are considered unacceptable according to religious tenets.

"Simultaneously, qazis and imams must adhere to the provisions of the Law on Freedom of Religious Beliefs, conducting religious ceremonies exclusively within mosques, shrines, and their designated territories," the statement noted. "In accordance with the laws of Azerbaijan, it is prohibited to chant slogans that undermine national-moral values or statehood traditions, to use attributes inconsistent with state symbols, or to engage in unauthorized street processions that disrupt public order."

The fatwa also highlighted that a significant aspect of the Muharram period in Azerbaijan is the organized blood donation campaign. "Continuing this humanitarian tradition, thousands of citizens will donate blood as an act of charity at blood bank branches in the capital and the regions, as well as at other medical facilities. This initiative aims to assist patients in need and support children suffering from hereditary diseases. The addresses of these donation centers will be published on the official website of the Caucasus Muslims Office."

Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar and is a period of reflection and mourning for Muslims worldwide, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein. In Azerbaijan, the state maintains a policy of secularism while respecting religious traditions, ensuring that such observances are conducted within the framework of national legislation and public safety.
