During the first three months of the current year, six men in Azerbaijan chose to adopt their wives' surnames upon entering into marriage.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing Report, that this information was provided by the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Azerbaijan. According to the official data, the trend has seen various fluctuations over recent years.
The Ministry further specified that 52 men adopted their spouses' surnames in 2025, while 62 men did so in 2024. In 2023, the figure was notably higher, with 109 men choosing to take their wives' last names at the time of marriage registration.
In Azerbaijan, the process of choosing a surname during marriage is governed by the Family Code, which grants both parties the equal right to retain their original surnames, choose one of the spouse's surnames as a common family name, or create a double-barreled surname. While traditional customs often see women adopting their husbands' surnames, the legal framework in Azerbaijan ensures gender neutrality in this administrative process, reflecting the country's commitment to civil equality in family law.
