King Harald V of Norway has been hospitalized due to health complications, according to the Operative Information Center-OMM. The 87-year-old monarch is currently receiving treatment for hemolytic anemia. During his hospitalization, Crown Prince Haakon will temporarily assume the duties of the head of state.
Palace officials had previously announced that the King's official schedule would be permanently reduced due to his advanced age. King Harald V, who has been on the throne since 1991, has repeatedly stated that he has no intention of abdicating.
It should be noted that the King required medical intervention earlier this year due to health issues while vacationing in Spain and later in Malaysia. During that period, he was fitted with a pacemaker. Other members of the royal family have also faced health challenges; Queen Sonja underwent medical examinations for heart-related issues in May.
Royal family faces public scrutiny
In addition to health concerns, the Norwegian royal family has recently been in the spotlight due to a series of controversies. Crown Princess Mette-Marit, wife of Crown Prince Haakon, spoke in March about her past association with the late American financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. She admitted to corresponding with Epstein and visiting his Florida home between 2011 and 2014. Mette-Marit expressed regret for not investigating Epstein's background more thoroughly and accepted responsibility for her actions.
Furthermore, Marius Borg Hoiby, the son of the Crown Princess from a previous relationship, has faced serious criminal charges. He was involved in legal proceedings regarding two separate rape allegations and was sentenced to four years in prison.
The Norwegian monarchy, while largely ceremonial, remains a central pillar of the nation's identity. King Harald V is widely respected for his steady leadership, having ascended the throne in 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V. As the constitutional head of state, his health status is a matter of significant national interest in Norway.
