NASA has successfully launched the Artemis II crewed lunar mission, with the Orion spacecraft carrying four astronauts toward the Moon.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the Orion spacecraft was propelled into space via the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket from Launch Pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This mission marks the first time humans have traveled toward the lunar vicinity in over half a century.

The international crew includes NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, alongside Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut Jeremy Hansen. Notably, Glover becomes the first African American and Koch the first woman to participate in a lunar mission. The 10-day flight plan involves the spacecraft orbiting the Moon before performing a high-speed reentry and splashdown in the Pacific Ocean to test life-support systems in deep space.

Artemis II represents the second phase of the United States' ambitious new lunar exploration program. It follows the successful uncrewed Artemis I mission completed in 2022. This program serves as a critical stepping stone for NASA's long-term goals, which include establishing a sustainable human presence on the Moon and preparing for future crewed expeditions to Mars. The mission highlights growing international cooperation in space exploration and the technological advancement of the SLS heavy-lift rocket system.
