NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is scheduled to visit the United States next week, according to Allison Hart, the head of the NATO press service.

The Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing Reuters, that the visit has been in the planning stages for a significant period. This trip marks Rutte's first official visit to the United States since the commencement of the military conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran.

The diplomatic mission follows recent statements by US President Donald Trump on April 1, in which he indicated that he is seriously considering a withdrawal from NATO. The US President cited the alliance's perceived passive involvement in the conflict against Iran as a primary reason for this potential shift in foreign policy. However, several NATO member states have expressed their intention to remain neutral in the Middle East conflict, with some nations going as far as prohibiting military aircraft from utilizing their airspace for operations related to the hostilities.

This high-level meeting is seen as a pivotal moment for the future of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Established in 1949, NATO serves as a collective defense system where its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party. The upcoming discussions between Rutte and American officials are expected to focus on maintaining alliance cohesion, addressing security challenges in the Middle East, and clarifying the United States' long-term commitment to the transatlantic partnership under the current administration.
