The Latvian National Armed Forces have placed NATO fighter jets stationed in the Baltic region on high alert following reports of a potential unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) threat in the Aluksne region.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing international media reports, authorities issued an urgent warning to citizens regarding potential risks to the country's airspace.
The high-readiness protocol was in effect from 04:59 to 06:25 local time. During this period, residents received emergency notifications via mobile devices alerting them to the potential aerial threat. While the situation has since stabilized, the incident underscores the heightened security environment in the Baltic states.
It is worth noting that on May 7, a drone crashed near an oil depot in the city of Rezekne, located in eastern Latvia, damaging four oil tanks. Preliminary assessments suggest that these drones may have been launched from the direction of Ukraine toward Russia, inadvertently entering Latvian airspace. Latvia, as a NATO member, maintains rigorous air defense monitoring to ensure the security of its borders and the integrity of the alliance's northern flank.
