Multilateralism must be demonstrated through concrete actions rather than mere rhetoric to address the current global security crises.
Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, made these remarks during a panel discussion titled "Multilateralism in Crisis: Rethinking Global Cooperation" held as part of the Global Baku Forum in Baku, Operative Information Center-OMM reports.
Addressing the participants, Hikmet Hajiyev highlighted the deep-seated challenges facing international peace and security. "There are serious crises in multilateralism, peace, and security. This is directly linked to the UN Security Council and its mandate. The involvement of the UN Security Council in solving global issues is very weak. For Azerbaijan, multilateralism is essential—not just in words, but in action. When we joined the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), there were criticisms, but Azerbaijan's chairmanship allowed the movement to gain significant prestige. Furthermore, important decisions were adopted as a result of Azerbaijan's effective presidency of COP29. Azerbaijan also continues to play a vital role in the Organization of Turkic States and has recently joined the D-8 organization. It is evident that there is a lack of political will in multilateralism at the global level. On the other hand, certain multilateral organizations face criticism due to a lack of accountability," he stated.
The Global Baku Forum, organized by the Nizami Ganjavi International Center, has become a premier platform for world leaders, Nobel laureates, and high-ranking officials to discuss pressing geopolitical challenges. By hosting such events, Azerbaijan continues to strengthen its position as a diplomatic hub between the East and West. The discussions emphasize Baku's commitment to fostering international dialogue and reforming global governance structures to better reflect contemporary realities and ensure the sovereign equality of states.
