Italy's Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has denied permission for several United States military aircraft bound for the Middle East to utilize the Sigonella Air Base in Sicily.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing foreign media outlets, that the decision followed the emergence of a flight plan involving unauthorized landings at the strategic facility.

According to official reports, the Chief of the Italian General Staff, Army General Luciano Portolano, alerted Minister Crosetto after receiving intelligence from the Italian Air Force. The data indicated that multiple U.S. aircraft had filed flight plans intended for landing at Sigonella before proceeding to destinations in the Middle East. It was noted that no formal authorization had been requested from the Italian General Staff, and the flight plans were only submitted while the aircraft were already airborne.

Preliminary investigations confirmed that these flights were not classified as routine or logistical operations. Consequently, Italian authorities determined that the mission fell outside the scope of existing bilateral defense agreements between Italy and the United States. While the incident occurred several days ago and was initially kept confidential, Italy's ANSA news agency has since confirmed the details with official sources.

The Sigonella Air Base, located in Sicily, serves as a critical Mediterranean hub for both the Italian Air Force and the U.S. Navy, as well as NATO operations. Under long-standing bilateral agreements, the base provides logistical support for U.S. forces; however, Italy maintains sovereignty over the facility, requiring prior notification and approval for non-routine military operations. This incident highlights the complexities of Mediterranean security cooperation as US President Donald Trump's administration continues to manage shifting regional dynamics in the Middle East.
