The United States is reportedly planning strategic measures within NATO regarding member states' positions on Iran.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Reuters has released information citing a U.S. official and documents allegedly leaked from the Pentagon. The reports indicate that Washington is developing influence measures against NATO allies deemed unsupportive of operations targeting Iran.

The leaked communications criticize certain countries for refusing or hesitating to provide essential base access, housing, and overflight rights necessary for these operations. According to the information, the potential actions under discussion include removing "problematic" countries from key positions within NATO and even the possibility of suspending Spain's role in the alliance. This friction stems from Madrid's refusal to allow its territory to be used for operations against Iran, despite Spain hosting significant U.S. military facilities. Reuters suggests these steps may be intended to "reduce the sense of entitlement" among certain European members within the Alliance.

This development comes as US President Donald Trump continues to emphasize the need for NATO allies to align more closely with collective security priorities and burden-sharing. Spain currently hosts several critical U.S. military installations, including the Rota Naval Base and Morón Air Base, which serve as vital logistical hubs for operations across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Historically, the use of these bases has been governed by bilateral defense cooperation agreements, but diverging foreign policy objectives regarding Middle Eastern stability have increasingly led to diplomatic tension between Washington and Madrid. Within the 32-member North Atlantic Treaty Organization, such disputes highlight the complex balance between national sovereignty and the strategic requirements of the broader alliance.
