An Iranian official has been executed after being convicted of espionage and "extensive cooperation" with Israel's Mossad intelligence agency.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the execution was carried out on Wednesday, according to the Mizan News agency, which is affiliated with the Iranian judiciary.
The individual, identified as Mehdi Farid, reportedly served as a manager within the civil defense committee of a sensitive state institution. The death sentence was implemented after the Supreme Court of Iran upheld the initial ruling. While the authorities cited "extensive cooperation" with foreign intelligence as the primary charge, specific details regarding the nature of the activities were not disclosed by official sources.
Iran frequently reports the apprehension and prosecution of individuals accused of spying for foreign entities, particularly Israel and the United States. These cases often involve allegations of sabotage or the leaking of classified information regarding Iran's military and nuclear programs. The execution of officials on such charges is a recurring theme in the ongoing geopolitical tensions between Tehran and Tel Aviv, where both nations have long been engaged in a shadow war involving cyberattacks, assassinations, and intelligence operations.
