Iran has officially banned two employees of the French embassy from returning to the country, following a diplomatic dispute that began last month. The decision marks a significant development in the ongoing friction between Tehran and Paris.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing The Times of Israel, that the announcement was made by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei. According to Baghaei, the embassy staff members were accused of engaging in activities supporting Iranian civil society, which Tehran claims constitutes a violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

"The very claim that these individuals were engaged in activities related to supporting civil society is an admission of a violation of the Vienna Convention," Baghaei stated during his weekly press conference.

The incident traces back to July, when Iranian authorities detained two employees of the French embassy in Tehran following their meetings with representatives of local civil society groups. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, speaking to France Inter last month, defended the diplomats, stating that their mandate included developing support programs for Iranian civil society, students, and artists.

This diplomatic standoff occurs against a backdrop of strained relations between Iran and several Western nations, often centered on human rights concerns and the treatment of civil society activists. The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, established in 1961, serves as the foundational framework for international diplomacy, defining the privileges and immunities of diplomatic missions while emphasizing the obligation of diplomats to respect the laws and regulations of the receiving state and not to interfere in its internal affairs.
