Tehran and Washington are reportedly engaged in discussions regarding compensation for damages incurred during wartime, a matter that could become a central component of a final agreement between the two nations.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, this was announced by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei during a press conference.
Baghaei stated that the parties are exchanging messages regarding mechanisms to allocate funds to Tehran to address the damages caused by the conflict. "One of the clauses of the memorandum involves creating the necessary conditions for the restoration of damages caused by the war. In this regard, various options are being considered. One of the topics discussed during the negotiations is compensation for damages and the allocation of a specific amount for reconstruction efforts," Baghaei noted.
On May 29, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, a member of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, stated that his country has suffered hundreds of billions of dollars in losses as a result of conflicts involving the US and Israel. He emphasized that the issue of compensation remains one of Tehran's primary priorities.
According to the Fars news agency, one of the potential agreements under discussion between Iran and the US involves the immediate release of $12 billion from Iran's frozen assets held abroad. Reports suggest that such a payment could serve as a prerequisite for the parties to move toward further stages of diplomatic dialogue.
The relationship between Iran and the United States has been characterized by decades of diplomatic tension and sanctions. The current discussions regarding financial compensation and asset unfreezing represent a complex effort to address long-standing grievances, with both sides navigating a delicate path toward potential de-escalation and renewed communication channels.
