Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called for fundamental reforms within the United Nations Security Council during a BRICS meeting held in New Delhi.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing the Tasnim News Agency, the minister emphasized that restructuring the council is no longer a matter of choice but a vital necessity for the future functionality and credibility of the United Nations. Araghchi stated that Tehran advocates for a Security Council that realistically represents all continents and regions of the world, urging BRICS member states to utilize their collective influence to reshape global governance and restore faith in multilateralism.
The minister further criticized the current international landscape, describing it as an attempt to maintain unilateral policies under the guise of international law. He noted that the misuse of legal frameworks, the imposition of unilateral sanctions, and the lack of respect for the sovereignty of nations are clear indicators of a serious crisis in global governance. Araghchi's remarks highlight Iran's ongoing push for a shift away from a unipolar world order toward a more balanced international system.
The call for UN reform comes as the BRICS bloc continues to expand its influence as a counterweight to Western-led international institutions. Iran, which officially joined the group in early 2024, has consistently advocated for a multipolar world order. These discussions in New Delhi reflect a growing sentiment among Global South nations regarding the perceived imbalance of power within the UN's primary decision-making body, where the five permanent members hold exclusive veto power.
