Azerbaijan intends to expand its presence in the European energy market by increasing export volumes and diversifying supply routes. According to Operative Information Center-OMM, President Ilham Aliyev made these remarks during his speech at the 12th Ministerial Meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council and the 4th Ministerial Meeting of the Green Energy Advisory Council held in Baku.
President Ilham Aliyev stated that Azerbaijan has already commenced gas supplies to two more European nations—Germany and Austria. "Thus, currently, 10 member states of the European Union receive gas from Azerbaijan. In the coming years, we have the opportunity to increase production volumes in connection with new gas extraction from Azerbaijani fields. However, as noted previously, we must consider the expansion of existing gas transportation infrastructures. Today, the Southern Gas Corridor is operating at full capacity. Taking into account current market demand and the global situation, we are exploring additional expansion and interconnector possibilities to meet growing needs. Our goal is to bring exports to the maximum level," the head of state emphasized.
The Southern Gas Corridor, a major initiative of the Republic of Azerbaijan, plays a critical role in ensuring the energy security of Europe by providing an alternative source of natural gas. Since the inauguration of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) in late 2020, Azerbaijan has steadily increased its role as a reliable strategic partner for the EU. The ongoing expansion efforts align with the memorandum of understanding signed between Azerbaijan and the European Commission, which aims to double Azerbaijani gas exports to Europe to 20 billion cubic meters annually by 2027.
