Georgia says EU gave ‘green light’ for 2025 coup attempt

Georgia’s Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili said an attempt to overthrow the government on Oct. 4, 2025, was carried out after receiving a “green light” from Brussels.

Papuashvili said it was now clear to everyone that violent protests against the Georgian authorities had been organized partly with funding from the European Union.

“It was precisely after the virtual ‘green light’ from Brussels that an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow the government was made on Oct. 4 last year,” the parliamentary speaker said.

Papuashvili made the remarks in response to comments by Michele Cervone d’Urso, the European Union’s representative to the United Nations, condemning arbitrary arrests and repression in Georgia.

The parliamentary speaker said the EU representative’s comments once again showed that Brussels’ policy toward Georgia had reached an impasse.

“Brussels resembles a soldier who has not learned that the war is over and continues planning military operations,” Papuashvili wrote.

According to him, the European Union must end its aggressive rhetoric if it wants to normalize relations with Georgia.

Georgia’s ties with the EU have faced increasing tension over disagreements concerning the country’s political course, protests and democratic standards. Tbilisi has repeatedly accused European institutions of interference, while EU officials have raised concerns over alleged pressure on opposition groups and civil society.
