Rescue operations are currently underway following the sinking of a passenger ship off the coast of Northern Cyprus. According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, authorities have confirmed that eight people have been detained in connection with the incident, including the ship's captain and seven crew members.
The vessel, which was operating on the Kyrenia-Mersin route, reportedly began to list before capsizing and sinking approximately four miles (6.44 kilometers) off the coast shortly after departing from the port. Initial reports indicate there were 259 passengers and 8 crew members on board.
Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Ünal Üstel and Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı have provided updates on the situation. While rescue efforts remain active, officials have confirmed that 242 individuals have been rescued, while eight people have tragically lost their lives. Search operations are continuing for 17 missing persons. Minister Arıklı stated that the cause of the sinking will be determined following the recovery of the vessel's "black box."
The maritime incident has triggered a significant emergency response, involving one helicopter and four Coast Guard vessels, with private boats also assisting in the search and rescue operations. Of those rescued, 161 individuals have been hospitalized for medical attention, while 76 passengers have been reunited with their families. The incident highlights the critical importance of maritime safety protocols and rapid emergency response capabilities in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
