US-Iran tensions: How the Middle East ceasefire was reached

It should be recalled that the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran on February 28. As a result, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking officials were killed.

In response, Iran began striking targets in Israel, as well as military bases of the United States and its allies located in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain, Iraq, and Cyprus.

Following the escalation, Iran, the United States, and their allies reached an agreement on a two-week ceasefire on the night of April 8, 2026. Iranian officials stated that during this period, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be ensured in coordination with the country's Armed Forces, taking into account technical limitations.

This latest rhetoric from the White House underscores US President Donald Trump's long-standing policy of demanding increased defense spending and greater strategic responsibility from North Atlantic Treaty Organization member states. Since taking office in January 2025, the administration has consistently pushed for a realignment of international security burdens, arguing that traditional alliances must adapt to contemporary geopolitical realities to remain effective.
